 “HEADSTOCK CHATTER”

(Everybody needs a boss to blame stuff on!  This is the boss’s vent!)

(Be sure and check this out, NEW WORDS OF WISDOM, from a NEW PRESIDENT!)

Oops!  Didn’t make the deadline!

So, here’s a little LIGHT WOOD!

THE COWBOY & THE PREACHER
A pompous preacher was seated next to a Texas cowboy on a flight to Idaho.
After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.
The cowboy asked for a whiskey and soda, which was brought and placed before him.
The flight attendant then asked the preacher if he would also like a drink.
He replied in disgust, "I'd rather be savagely attacked by a brazen whore, than let liquor     touch my lips."
The Texas cowboy then handed his drink back to the flight attendant and said, "I didn't know we had a choice

Why We Love Children

A kindergarten pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat, but it was dead.
"How do you know that the cat was dead?" she asked her pupil.
"Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move," answered the child innocently.
You did WHAT ? ! ?"      the teacher exclaimed in surprise.
"You know,"explained the boy, "I leaned over and went 'Pssst!' and it didn't move."

“TURNED EVENTS”
MEETING IN REVIEW

(If you were there and paid attention you know, if you didn’t or weren’t, then this is a recap)

Well, the Christmas party was in the editors opinion a great success.  Man all that food and the new diet restrictions imposed on me was a real test!  We had a very good turnout, and the pretty ladies…..….!!  They were a real pleasure to the eyes to see them dressed in all their finery.  Our EX president, Mr. Dale Lemmons, brought the “meeting” to order, my friend Bill Peace led us in saying grace and we chowed down like hungry teenagers.  After gorging ourselves, the ones that brought gifts to exchange did so (I left mine on the kitchen counter!!!!)  .  Dufus here, enjoying the occasion, forgot his responsibility and took no notes.  Boy, there sure was some pretty stuff there!!

A “nice” plaque was presented to the “old” president (Dale Lemons, in case you already forgot) by the “New” president, Mr. Jimmy Holton.  Replacing Jimmy is Mr. Vance Loy as the new Vice President.  Boy,

Vance is a real contributor to this club!  Cynthia Johnson released the money and responsibility to our new Treasurer, Mr. Bill Bradfield of Comfort fame.  Anybody but me see how much dessert James Johnson ate?  Phenomenal!!!  I think he did it right in front of me just for spite!

James, as usual, contributed some of his own money to make the toys and see that they came out right with the beads.  Our New President was taking up collections to repay him because the ex-treasurer(Cynthia Johnson), like all good treasurers, left the position with the till pretty much defunct!(Grin)  Ya gotta watch Holton, he collected from my wife AND from me.  Gotta give him credit tho, he left me with $2.00 for gas to get home on!  Does Jimmy really have a conscience or was it just the season?

This meeting was so good, it was hard for me to leave, course my wife took care of that for me!!!

NEW AND EXOTIC WOODS
(Since we learn and grow from our members, all of us need to strive for new members)

Ya know, I was looking around at the Christmas Party, and not bragging but most of our members and I say again, most, were at least my age or older!  Wouldn’t hurt to get us some younger members, at least for some of the grunt work!

REMEMBER, CLUB DUES ARE DUE!!!

CHIPPER OF THE MONTH
This is who we throw money (or rocks) at for entertaining us at this months meeting!)

Hot diggity dog!  Our new VP is gonna razzle dazzle us with his techniques of end grain turning!  Not sure whether Vance is taking advantage of his new position or he was unsuccessful of finding a demonstrator!  Either way, HCT is fortunate to get him up front and releasing some of his secrets!

Those of you that have demo’d for the club or anywhere else for that matter know the hassle and trauma involved.  Vance, being the trooper he is, stepped up to the plate.  Be sure and shake his hand when he is done, he deserves it!

 MYSTERY WOOD
(Snippets of local, regional or international newsworthiness)

In case you missed my e-mail, Bernie Peace was in the hospital in Kerrville just before Christmas.  Last report was that she is home and doing better each day!  Hope Bill’s bride continues to improve!

Aluminum Spigot for Accurate Re-Chucking

  Monday, December 29, 2003

When Turning Vessels I often prefer to use a Spigot at the Base as the means of holding the Piece in the Chuck, this is generally 30mm Ø by 25 / 30mm long when using the 38mm (1½") O'Donnell Jaws in the APTC Chuck.

The problem that I have experienced is that if it is necessary to remove the Piece from the Chuck before the Vessel is completed then when Re-Chucking, the Vessel will not always run true.

This is caused by the Wood being deformed by the pressure exerted by the Jaws when first placed in the Jaws, then when removed from the Chuck this deformity can swell back to almost, but not totally, its original shape. This makes accurate Re-Chucking difficult, if not impossible, to achieve.

This situation is often worse for those Woods with variations in Density, i.e. Burrs, Spalted Woods, Open Grain Woods etc.

To overcome this I obtained a length of Aluminum Tube (The Ink Transfer Drum from an Old Fax M/C) this is quite a Hard Aluminum  and at 32mm Ø externally and 26mm Ø internally was ideal for my requirements, I cut this into 6 lengths of 40mm giving me six potential Re-usable Spigots,

Being Aluminum it is an easy task to true the ends up on the Lathe using a Medium Cut File. The dimensions  of the Tube required  will of course differ from Chuck / Jaw make and size.

In use I mount the Piece of Wood I want to Turn between Centers or mount it on a Screw Chuck and Turn it to a Round and then carefully Turn a Spigot to give a good interference fit in the Aluminum Tube once this is done I mount the Tube in the Chuck and then with a few drops of Superglue on the Turned Spigot push the two together.

Now if at any time you want to remove the Work from the Chuck you will be ensured of a Firm and Positive Spigot when remounting the Piece which will always run True.

Parting off is carried out as normal and I true up the Wooden End of the retained portion of the Spigot as I often also turn smaller items that require a smaller diameter spigot and it is therefore easy to mount the Tube + Wood Insert and bore this out to suit the size of spigot.

Once the Tube is finished with it is a simple task to mount it in the Chuck and carefully Turn out the old Wood Core and the Tube is then, again, ready for your next Project.

REMEMBER PAUL?
MINERAL SPIRITS HELP SANDING PROCESS

Have you had problems with scratches under your finish—even though you sanded thoroughly?  Try wiping your turning with mineral sprits.  The mineral spirits pull the fine sanding dust out of the scratches that you couldn’t see when they were full of dust.  Paul Korbach-Kerrville Texas as posted in American Woodturner, Winter 2003, page 60.

Pecan!!!Pecan!!!Pecan!!!Pecan!!!Pecan!!!Pecan!!!Pecan!!!Pecan!!!

The editor is “intending”  to bring a trailer loaded with pecan.  Most of this was cut green just before I went on “sabbatical”.  I got to get it off the trailer as I kind of “borrowed” it to get the wood.  I was only gonna use the trailer for a couple of days, honest!  Mr. Roger Felps came and grabbed a boo coodle of it, left me with some near worn out gloves.

(Well this all changed, “they” called and wanted the trailer back before the meeting, I felt a wit bit embarrassed!  Fortunately, my buddy Jim Hill and Howard Green came over and helped me dump it at Vern Hallmarks grab pile.  Vern “promised” to bring some over in his grey Log Hauler Thursday!  Nothing like getting together with buddies, especially when one of THEM springs for lunch!!!!)

Sorry, I wasn’t there.  I was flirting with some nurses, ya know!

Well, more “filler”…….

A little girl goes to the barber shop with her father.
She stands next to the barber chair, while her dad gets his hair cut,
 eating a snack cake.
The barber says to her, "Sweetheart, you're gonna get hair
on your Twinkie."

She says, "Yes, I know, and I'm gonna get boobs too."

Ok, I brought this up before, but here it is again.  About that outdoor “turning-burning” picnic!!  Who is willing to help organize one for the summer?  I know I would enjoy some meat cooked over some of Carl Johnson’s exotic cutoffs!  Yummie!!!  Not too early to start organizing.  One name that comes to mind right at first is Larry Walton!!!
