AS THE HILL COUNTRY TURNS Volume # 8 Issue # 10 October 9 MEETING PLACE Hill Country Turners meet in the basement of the KACC (Kerr Arts & Cultural Center) at 228 Earl Garrett, Kerrville, Texas at 6:30 pm on the 2nd Thursday of the month, unless otherwise notified. “HEADSTOCK CHATTER” (Everybody needs a boss to blame stuff on! This is the boss’s vent!) Another month is about gone, when you get my age each one is cherished. October brings thoughts of leaves changing color and falling, days getting shorter, cooler temperatures, and the approach of Christmas. It will be only a short while before the stores start with holiday greetings and sales. At this time it is also time for the Hill Country Turners to seriously think about toys for children. It has become a tradition, a very fine one too, for the HCT to make and give toys at Christmas. Therefore, if you have not thought about it, do so now. To aid in this process, I am asking that those turners with toy ideas and/or models to bring these to the October meeting to share with others. Perhaps we should schedule and conduct a workshop to mass produce some toys--your call. I will ask about this at the meeting. Those of you that attended the SWAT Symposium had the opportunity to learn from others, as well as be inspired by the Instant Gallery. I always gain from observing others work and working. Lest we forget, that is what the Hill Country Turners is committed to doing, helping each other learn. We are an educational organization. I spent my working lifetime as an educator and I find that this is still the most challenging of efforts. Regardless of your current status as a turner--beginner, intermediate, or advanced--there is something to learn and something to share. What I am asking is for more sharing. When I joined the HCT, I was a beginner. Although I had worked with wood most of my life, I had not been a turner. So, when I retired and moved to Kerrville I learned of the HCT and joined. Simple turning was my objective at the time and that is what I did. However, with the encouragement and tutoring of some members of HCT significant progress has been made in a few short years. At each step I felt good about what I was doing and challenged to do better with the next piece. This was and is because of the members of HCT. So, I challenge you to ask for help or to provide help as is needed. We exist to help others learn to turn or turn better and in turn (to make a pun) grow in our abilities. Do not hesitate to ask for a lesson or so and do not hesitate to offer to help. We learn by teaching. “TURNED EVENTS” MEETING IN REVIEW (If you were there and paid attention you know, if you didn’t or weren’t, then this is a recap) HCT had a good turn out, the editor did not count heads but there were more than I had fingers and toes! Our Special Events Coordinator must have made bail, first time we have seen Bill Hussey in a while! El Presidente kicked the meeting off talking of the structure of the “nominating committee”. As stated before, election of officers is coming up. Step up to the plate and hit a grand slam! Dale thanked the participation of the club at the SWAT symposium. The Christmas party was brought up, as reservations need to be made if we are going to have it at a restaurant again this year. Larry Walton suggested we go back to the “old” way with a covered dish and have it in the basement. Uel made the comment that the Fire Marshall set the limit of 50 in the basement, because there was only one exit when the concrete walls and concrete ceiling catch on fire. I think this was tabled for consideration. Basically, no resolution was made and it is still up in the air! (I think). Dale mentioned that since our exposure has lessened in the community, new memberships have dwindled also. He requested members to come up with innovative ways to attract new members! Dale introduced the one and only Mr. Mesquite, Uel Clanton. Uel was very well prepared, seemingly having done this demo in years past. We learned about turquoise inlay techniques, a wee bit of geology and the fact that all “turquoise” colored rock is not necessarily turquoise. Seems there are some people out there willing to scam people in order to make a buck. The editor, educated at the same alma mater as the demonstrator in the same field, tried to catch him in some errors, all to no avail! Mr. Mesquite remembered more geology than I did! There were samples of everything to hold and caress, hope they got back home to the demonstrator in one piece! Don Kaiser never faltered with the new video system, what a trooper! Raul Pena brought in a bunch of Paul Korbach’s stuff for give-a-way! We unloaded his truck and he sent his wife packing to do the family wash while we held the meeting! What a slave driver that guy is!! We missed Sandy! It was somewhat sad to go through another man’s treasures and projects left unfinished. A lot of goodies that will be put to good use. NEW
AND EXOTIC WOODS HCT was honored with one guest, Mr. Dick Markham from Lubbock, drug in by his brother, HCT member Don Markham of Center Point fame! Glad to have you Dick! Our president mentioned that since our “exposure” to the community has lessened, we need to find new ways to attract new members. Got a hot idea, pass it along! CHIPPER
OF THE MONTH One of the Comfort kids, our very own Mr. Bill Bradfield is going to razzle dazzle us with his skill and magic. Rumor has it, that we shall see some possible techniques on pepper mills and birdhouses. Remember, Halloween is coming up, and Bill being the type of guy I have learned him to be, just might have a few tricks up his sleeve. Wait a minute, Bill seldom wears shirts with sleeves! MYSTERY
WOOD Club Order Check your Craft Supplies catalog and make up a list of the tools and supplies that you need. Following the October meeting we will be submitting the fall Club Order to Craft Supplies. Most of you know the procedure....make up the list and give it to Bill Hussey. If we have accumulated the minimum retail value of $1,000.00 for our combined orders it will be submitted to Craft Supplies to be filled. You will be notified of the actual discounted value of your order which you will pay for upon delivery of the order. The discounts will vary from about 15 to 20 per cent on most tools to as much as 50 per cent on many of the kit/supply items. There are few items, in the chuck category for example, that the manufacturers may not permit Craft Supplies to discount. The good news is that you will not have to pay sales tax or shipping on even those items. Christmas The editor has had no feedback on the request below and Nick said he is not gonna make all those ornaments by himself! Come on folks, we gotta get some easy ideas for this chore! Good exposure for us all! Santa Claus is gonna be here before ya know it and he is gonna want something to put in his bag to deliver. Ya’ll start putting your thinking caps on as to what we are gonna do for the wee ones this year. Dust off the grey matter, search the web or your inventory of “useto” make items the kiddo’s would like and bring those ideas to the club. We are gonna need to start on this pretty darn quick, like next month. You don’t want a lump of coal in your stocking do you? NAP
ATTACK STUFF From: http://www.laymar-crafts.co.uk/ During some of my experimental Turning I have often found the need for a method of removing material by other means than Turning, a Rasp would have been the answer but as these cost money and there use would have been only occasional I decided to make some of my own. I had for some unknown reason saved a load of old Bandsaw Blades which were too blunt for sawing with, I think my intention was to re-sharpen them but never quite got round to it, so I decided to turn them into a series of Rasps. I first cut each Blade into a number of equal lengths to suit various sizes of Rasp, but generally 200mm to 300mm long [8" to 12"] and then by bundling these together I could make Rasps of different lengths and widths.
I take 4 lengths, or 6 or 8 depending how wide you want the Rasp to be, of cut Bandsaw Blade and clamp them in a Vice and simply Silver Solder each end.
Once the Rasp has cooled down you can trim the ends by rounding off using a Grinder and for a Grip I used a short length of Water Hose, the type used for connecting the Washing Machine to the Water Supply is ideal. I now have a half dozen Rasps of various Sizes and Coarseness, by using either ¼" or ½" Blades with 4tpi or 6tpi, I even have one that cuts on the Pull Stroke for a particular Perforated Vessel I was making. 2003
GRIT Ok folks, these are getting harder and harder to come up with! Either patent those golden ideas of yours or send them to me to put in the Newsletter!! 1. Read! Get on the internet and shop those woodturning sites, their how to’s often have a lot of “wish I’d thought of that”! 2. Thanks to James Johnson, for giving me the old issues of More Woodturning from Fred Holder, Subscribe if you don’t, it has a wealth of information in each issue! 3. On sharpening, I noticed a gentleman from the Houston Club at the SWAT Symposium that took a magic marker and marked his gouge with it and then touched it to the grinder to see if he had the right bevel, when it took an even part of the color off, he sharpened the gouge! 4. “…..I have drilled a recess in the “log” where the spur drive goes. In my case, a 1” Forstner is a tight fit. I drill ¼” deep in hardwood and at least 3/8” deep in softer woods, this better secures the piece from flying off the lathe!” Gerrard Bachand, Eads, CO.

Shucks Just when ya think you are getting pretty good at spinning wood, these guys bring in some of their trophys that surrived and really rub it in!! Bill Bradfield took center stage first with his “captivating” captive ring! Cynthia Johnson (Ms. Money bags) was awe inspired by Larry Genender and brought a platter in that looked as good as if Larry had done it. See, isn’t that the ultimate compliment, to demo something and someone capitalizes on it and duplicates the procedure! Carl, the other half, demonstrated some pieces showing surface texturing and showed the “Jig” he was testing that he did it with. Raul Pena showed a turning Paul Korbach did and how he cut Christmas trees as slices off the turning. Raul stressed the innovativeness available to turners and not being inhibited to try new different things! Larry Walton, hmmmm, Larry Walton…. Damn, Larry stood up but the editor must have went out to lunch or something….my notes stopped here…sorry Larry! Oh yeah, Larry made a “Frisbee” style bowl out of the box elder James brought in, Man o man, that box elder has gone into some great stuff! All these folks are sooooooo good! Quite awe inspiring! “SHOP
