HEAT TREATING

  1. Heat the rod and let the temperature slowly move up the rod until the  tip reaches the recommended heat treatment range of 1450 to 1475 degrees for O-1. This is the temperature about 50 degrees hotter than the point where the steel loses its magnetic quality. Test the tip with a magnet until there is no sign of magnetism in the tip then heat to a cherry red color.
  2. Plunge the rod into an oil container.  Boiled linseed oil  or olive oil work fine.  Do not use a plastic or glass container for holding your oil.
  3. Temper at 300 degrees for about 15 minutes for a hardness ( and toughness ) of 63--65 R.C. This step can be done in an oven, a Barbeque pit or in a deep fryer.

SHARPENING

At this point you are ready to sharpen the hook tool. Begin by making sure that the bevel is either flat or slightly hollow ground. Use a sharpening stone or a diamond file to clean up any imperfections in the bevel surface. Round off and polish any sharp edges on the non cutting edge of the bevel.  A sharp corner can scratch the cleanly cut surface.

After the bevel has been ground, hone the inside of the hook tool with a round diamond file until a sharp edge develops.
